McDonald's has been testing automation technologies in several places around the United States, and some experts expect that it will eventually become totally automated. The fast-food company has used AI technology in drive-thrus and experimented with eateries that do not employ humans.
One prototype restaurant in Fort Worth, Texas, for example, uses an autonomous conveyer belt system to deliver meals to diners rather of depending on human personnel. Furthermore, some McDonald's locations have used artificial intelligence to recognize voice orders, which has proven to be successful with an 85% accuracy rate.
While some argue that automation can increase efficiency and lower costs, others worry about job loss and the impact on workers. According to a 2021 Institute for Policy Studies analysis [1,] McDonald's is one of the 300 publicly traded corporations with the lowest median worker salaries. Automation technology deployment may worsen this problem by further lowering the number of available employment for low-wage people.
Overall, McDonald's restaurant automation raises significant concerns about the role of technology in the workplace, the future of the fast-food sector, and the possible impact on employees and communities. While automation may have advantages, it is critical to understand the disadvantages and strive toward solutions that promote employees' rights and well-being.
