Apple goes after more AI!

Apple has recently acquired a Canadian AI startup called DarwinAI. This acquisition was made earlier in 2024 and has not been officially announced by Apple. DarwinAI specializes in making deep neural networks smaller and more efficient, which could potentially be used to bring more AI processing on-device for Apple's products. As a result of the acquisition, Alexander Wong, an AI researcher from the University of Waterloo, has joined Apple's AI team as a director.

This acquisition comes at a time when Apple is planning to introduce new AI features in its upcoming iOS 18 software release. It is speculated that Apple is working on optimizing large language models for phones, and the technology from DarwinAI could be useful in achieving this goal.  Read more
